CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF LIFE: LIAM donates RM50,000 to CARIF for Cancer awareness and education program

Kuala Lumpur, 25 November 2014 –  In conjunction with its 40th Anniversary celebration, the Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) took its community service programme to the next level through its Insurans Hayat Cares platform to raise awareness on Cancer and Cancer education.  A grant of RM50,000 was presented to Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF), by LIAM President, Mr. Vincent Kwo and witnessed by the Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia, YBhg. Dato’ Muhammad bin Ibrahim at LIAM’s 40th Anniversary dinner celebration at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur on 21 November 2014.  CARIF was represented by its Chief Executive, Professor Dr. Teo Soo Hwang at the dinner.

The historic event also saw the unveiling of the Insurans Hayat Cares’ “Be Frank” Cancer Booklet by YBhg Dato’ Muhammad bin Ibrahim, Deputy Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia. The “Be Frank”, Cancer booklet is a community service initiative undertaken by LIAM as part of its cancer research and awareness program, a collaborative effort with CARIF.

Highlighting top 5 cancers among men and women in the country, and the steps that one has to take to reduce the risks of cancer, LIAM will be distributing 50,000 booklets in multi languages to the general public.

“This is part of our proactive approach in reaching out to the community by highlighting the top cancers in the country and the simple steps that one should take to reduce the risks of cancer in his daily life,”  said Mr Kwo.

He added, “Through the “Be Frank” Cancer booklets, the Insurans Hayat Cares’ community service platform sets to play a more engaging role with the community by promoting cancer education among its member companies, at LIAM’s events as well as to the general public.”

The “Be Frank” Cancer booklet is inspired by Frank Chong, a 35-year old cancer survivor, who has beaten the odds by surviving cancer when he was 11.  Through the booklet, it is hoped that it will inspire cancer patients and their families to be like Frank, to help raise awareness on cancer.  The use of the word “Frank” is to encourage Malaysians to be open about cancer and to dispel the myths around cancer. Other than featuring the signs and symptoms of cancer, the booklet also features preventive measures as well as inspirational messages from Cancer survivors.

Over the last 40 years, apart from being a leading insurance association in the country, LIAM has continuously played its part in giving back to the community via its Life Insurance Day. It started back in 1991, where LIAM contributed to the underprivileged and the needy in different parts of the community.  LIAM strives to continue its noble efforts by bringing its community service programmes to the next level through the launch of its Insurans Hayat Cares’ community service platform early this year.
