Insurans Hayat Cares team at 34th Terry Fox Run

On 2 November 2014, the Insurans Hayat Cares team consisting 390 runners from 11 member companies took part in a 3-kilometre annual volunteer-driven run to raise funds for cancer research in Malaysia.

Held at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, the run was part of LIAM’s contribution to the society and in line with the objectives of Insurans Hayat Cares which is to create more awareness on cancer and promote cancer education among the society.

Cancer has been identified as our main community service project for the next few years and Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF) has been chosen as one of the cancer associations that LIAM will collaborate with to meet these objectives.

Terry Fox Run is the largest single day fund raiser for cancer research held globally in commemoration of “Terry Fox - a Canadian cancer bone patient”.  He completed 5,373 km in 143 consecutive days to raise funds for Cancer research.  He passed away in 1980 at the age of 21. The Terry Fox Foundation was setup in 1981 to continue carry the same objective across the world.

Since 1981, the Terry Fox Run has raised more than 550 million Canadian dollars in aid of cancer research around the world. The Terry Fox Foundation requires that the funds raised be used for cancer research in the country where the Run is held. The beneficiary this year is the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF). CARIF is the first independent, non-profit cancer research organization in Malaysia.

CARIF being the beneficiary of the Terry Fox Run received a contribution of RM21,450 from LIAM members via the purchase of T-shirts and merchandise items.
